English Language Learners (ELL)
The English language acquisition is an extremely difficult task to achieve, particularly for students who speak English as a second language. The inconsistencies and intricacies of learning the English language is effectively captured in this statement:
“There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. We take English for granted. And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham…” –Author unknown
As committed educators who embrace the idea of lifelong learning, WebWise Tutors supports ELL students and their families by helping students acquire the English language in the most effective and comprehensive way possible. Our company also is in a position to collaborate with a variety of school districts throughout the United States in order to deliver staff development programs designed to support schools and their support of students’ English language acquisition.
The WebWise Tutors Philosophy
WebWise Tutors understands the challenges second-language learners face, and therefore is guided by the belief that all students should have access to the best education possible, no matter what their challenges may be. WebWise Tutors embraces the cultural diversity of our students, and believes in an equitable education for all children. WebWise Tutors also believes in providing as much language support as necessary in order for a student to be able to not only access their curriculum, but also to be able to academically prosper and thrive. We are committed to providing a solid partnership between students, their families, and schools in order to overcome the obstacles presented by learning the English language.
WebWise Tutors’ Staff
Our staff contains bi-lingual teachers who are either CLAD or BCLAD certified. Additionally, our tutors are credentialed teachers who have subject-matter expertise in each field they teach. Our tutors understand how to effectively bridge any language barriers that may present an obstacle in a student’s learning process using the Language Acquisition Theory. Additionally, our tutors work towards closing any and all achievement gaps within our diverse student population, with the ultimate goal being academic growth and progress.
With other tutoring companies, frequently tutors are bewildered when they try to explain to a student why it is incorrect to state, "I have many homeworks to completed" or why we say "on Monday" but "in June". Our tutors are equipped to handle the often times complex concerns of students who speak English as a second language. This includes unfamiliar grammatical errors, as well as the different conventions and rhetorical patterns of other languages.
Within the scope of the WebWise Tutors service delivery model, our educators employ various strategies in meeting the needs of our ELL students. Strategies include, but are not limited to:
- Access instruction through a variety of different languages our tutors are fluent in
- Supportive climate
- Opportunities to use language
- Affirmation of language and culture
- High expectations
- Differentiation of instruction for students’ levels of language proficiency
- Vocabulary building
- Opportunities for family involvement
- Scaffolded instruction
