Online Tutoring Job Requirements

To qualify as an online tutor, applicants must meet the following expectations and minimum qualifications:

For K-12 General Tutoring:

  • Be legally authorized to work in the U.S.*
  • Have an earned bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution.
  • Hold current, full teaching certification (i.e., credential or license) from a recognized state education department (our tutoring positions make for great online jobs for teachers).
  • Current administrative credentials and school counseling credentials also meet general tutor eligibility requirements.
  • Have previous teaching or tutoring experience (online tutoring employment is a plus)
  • Possess a good, positive attitude, and a thirst for empowering students to become all they are capable of becoming. In short, we want educators.

*Exceptions will be considered for qualified tutor candidates who reside in targeted regions/countries outside of the U.S.

Additional Requirements for Special Education Tutoring:

In addition to meeting the general tutoring expectations, Special Education tutors must hold full state Special Education certification to work with children from the state where a student's IEP is written.

General Requirements for Tutoring Post-Secondary (College) Students:

  • Be legally authorized to work in the U.S.*
  • Have an earned a bachelor’s or master's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution in the specific subject matter or content area (or closely related area) in which tutoring will take place.  If the degree is not from a U.S. regionally accredited institution, it must have U.S. equivalency.
  • Preferred (but not required) professional practitioner experience in the subject or field where the tutoring is being provided.

*Exceptions will be considered for qualified tutor candidates who reside in targeted regions/countries outside of the U.S.

    FAQ

    How long does it take before I find out I'm hired?
    Right now, our application process and certification process is taking approximately 4-6 weeks.

    What happens after I'm hired?
    Successful applicants will be invited to participate in a formal 15-minute live teaching demonstration as part of the hiring process using the Blackboard technology.

    What other support will I be given?
    Following the certification workshops, all WebWise Tutors candidates will be assigned a mentor tutor who will assist the newly hired tutor prepare to work with students during the beginning phase of work

    Candidates who successfully complete the assessment will be invited to participate in a 1 0-hour tutor certification workshop.

    What are the technology requirements that need to be met in order to tutor?

    • High speed Internet or DSL service
    • A computer with a minimum of 1Ghz processor and 512 MB of RAM
    • PC users require Windows Vista or Windows 7 (or newer) operating systems
    • Mac users require Mac OSX 10.6.8 or newer with X11 installed
    • A current version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, FireFox, or Chrome
    • A microphone and headset that can be purchased at a technology store for approximately $30 dollars
    • For computers without a built-in camera, an external camera from a technology store can be purchased for approximately $30 dollars

    How many hours can I expect to tutor?

    • Tutors' hours will vary, but no tutor will work more than 20 hours per week. All work will be assigned depending on student needs, student enrollment, and tutor availability. If you’re looking for part-time online teaching jobs then WebWise Tutors is perfect for you!
